Old meets New and sing ‘With ONE Voice’

Two local choirs meet on 7th July as Malvern Male Voice Choir reaches the focal point of its 90th Anniversary year. In a celebration Concert in Great Malvern Priory the Choir is joined by Powick Community Choir and singers from Chase School. Over one hundred voices combine to commemorate the Malvern Male Voice Choirs’ inauguration in 1922.

Malvern Male Voice Choir began life in 1922 as a male quartet which expanded to become Malvern Wells Male Voice Choir. Its strong development was halted in 1939 at the outbreak of war but by 1944 under the leadership of Dorothy Leatherdale, and with the support of locally billeted American servicemen, it went from strength to strength. In 1947 the Choir began a twenty two year association with theBoysCollegeunder its new musical director Leonard Blake, who later became president. Over its history the Choir has won competitions, sung at Eisteddfods and broadcast on the BBC and, at its Diamond Jubilee in 1982, it sang to an audience of over 2500 people in Hereford Cathedral. Malvern Male Voice Choir has always provided strong support for charities, both local and national, including Cancer ResearchUKandMalvernCommunityHospital. Its musical journey continues under the direction of Charles Pavey, its Musical Director since 2004, who will be conducting the Choir.

The 70 strong Powick Community Choir, which was founded in 2010, has quickly established an excellent reputation for the quality of its performances.  Tom Wells, its conductor and musical director, said ‘I would like to thank Malvern Male Voice Choir for inviting us relative newcomers to join them in their celebration – ninety years of continuous music making is quite an achievement, and something of which they are justly proud’.

The celebration concert ‘With ONE Voice’ will be performed at Great Malvern Priory on Saturday 7th July starting at 7.30pm. Tickets are £9.00 (under 18’s £3.00) and include a special Souvenir Programme as well as interval refreshments. Tickets can be bought in advance from Malvern Tourist Information Office, or on the night at the door. Further information from 01684 57715.
